Valle de Nereidas Geothermal Project
Baseload clean energy from Colombia’s volcanic resources
About the Business
The Valle de Nereidas Geothermal Project, located in the rural area of the municipality of Villamaría (Caldas), in the surroundings of the Nevado del Ruiz volcanic massif, addresses Colombia’s dependence on climate‑vulnerable hydropower and fossil‑fuel thermal generation, which undermine energy security and increase emissions. As the first geothermal power project of its kind in the country, it harnesses naturally occurring hot fluids from the Earth’s crust to generate renewable electricity through continuous, weather‑independent operation. The project is expected to produce approximately 540,000 MWh per year, delivering firm baseload power with a low land footprint and minimal environmental impact. By reducing greenhouse gas emissions, diversifying the national energy matrix, and strengthening grid reliability, the Valle de Nereidas Project sets a strategic precedent for geothermal development in Colombia while supporting a resilient and low‑carbon energy transition.
